Crime Without Reason Affects Wake Forest Students

wsskyline

Since the start of the academic year, Wake Forest University and the surrounding neighborhoods have been ridden with crime.  On August 29th, a man was spotted flashing students along the trail to reach the Reynolda Village shops and restaurants.  Two weeks later, the Winston-Salem Police announced that the suspect has been arrested and charged with indecent exposure.

On September 9th, an off-campus house, occupied by several Wake Forest students, were robbed at gunpoint by two masked men.  One shot was fired in the house and, thankfully, no one was injured.  A day later, Winston-Salem Police Department identified and arrested a man in connection with the incident and has been charged with armed robbery.  However, the other man still remains missing and may be out to strike again.

The University has done an adequate job in providing services to their students.  After the armed robbery, they directly offered assistance to the affected students.  Additionally, they gathered with the students who lived off campus to stress the importance of safety and careful living.

Parents send their children to college in order to be educated and ready to live and work efficiently.  Now all parents do is worry about the safety of their children instead of making sure their kids do laundry every week.

Although Wake Forest University has provided support after the incidents occur, what can they do to prevent them from occurring?  Yes, people from all communities around the United States commit crimes for no reason.  However, can preventative measures be put in place by the University and the Winston-Salem Police Department to keep the students safe?

They must keep the young people safe in the community.  Parents send their children to college in order to be educated and ready to live and work efficiently.  Now all parents do is worry about the safety of their children instead of making sure their kids do laundry every week.

Yes, services have been offered to students in lieu of the recent incidents, but that does not prevent these crimes from happening.  Something must be done to keep the students safe from the criminals.
