GOP Gets a Big Win with Cruz Endorsement

US-VOTE-REPUBLICANS-DEBATE

Texas Senator Ted Cruz officially endorsed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on September 23rd. This endorsement shocked many after campaigns filled with brutal attacks from both Cruz and Trump.

This endorsement is a big win for the GOP as it continues to unify its members under a common goal: to prevent Hillary from taking the presidency. Cruz, in his official statement, gave six key “policy differences” that caused him to back Trump, independent from his previous vow to back whoever won the nomination.

The first and likely most significant, policy that Cruz attributed to his decision was the spot available on the Supreme Court bench. Trump, also on September 23rd, released a list of potential Supreme Court nominees. This list is full of men and women who have dedicated their career to defending the constitution and will continue to defend if appointed. A name on the list that particularly appealed to Cruz was Senator Mike Lee.

Cruz’s endorsement is a big win for the GOP because it calls conservatives, no matter the stand on Trump,  to reflect on the impact of a Hillary presidency on our way of life and the basic rights we enjoy.

Senator Lee, a Republican from Utah, has a long list of accomplishments. In his early legal career, he clerked for Supreme Court Justice Alito. Later, he served as an Assistant US attorney. Lee, in 2010, finally won a seat in the Senate where he now serves on the Judiciary committee. Lee and others on Trump’s list will no doubt serve the Supreme court well by defending the constitution and conservative values, like the late Justice Scalia.

The Supreme Court issue was very important to Cruz, as his endorsement occurred directly after Trump released his list of Justice candidates. This issue is also very important to voters. This presidential election is about more than the next four to eight years. Whoever is elected will get to chose a Supreme Court Justice that will break ties on issues until long after the presidential term. The Cruz endorsement reminds voters of the Supreme Court issue and contextualizes its consequences by specifying some impending decisions.

The most provocative of these was the Second Amendment. Cruz reminded voters that the next Supreme Court Justice will likely break the tie vote in regards to the Second Amendment and whether Americans will continue to enjoy the basic right to defend themselves, their families, and their property.

Cruz’s endorsement of Trump spells out what exactly is at stake this November. If Trump loses not only will Americans have to endure a Hillary presidency, but we will experience the lasting consequences of the liberal Justice she will appoint. This endorsement has helped to further unify the Republican Party in support of a Trump presidency.

This support, however, is by no means unconditional. Cruz said in his statement, “[E]ven though I have had areas of significant disagreement with our nominee, by any measure Hillary Clinton is wholly unacceptable…”. This statement reminds the voters that this election is about so much more than Trump versus Hillary. This election is about a tie-breaking Supreme Court vote that will endure for decades. Cruz reminds Americans that Trump is not perfect, yet we cannot afford to back a democrat, particularly Hillary, when so much is at stake.

Cruz continues his statement by laying out the important policy decisions that make Trump more appealing than Hillary. In addition to the Supreme Court seat, issues at stake in this election include Obamacare, energy, immigration, national security and internet freedom.

Cruz’s endorsement is a big win for the GOP because it calls conservatives, no matter the stand on Trump,  to reflect on the impact of a Hillary presidency on our way of life and the basic rights we enjoy.
