Wake Forest Student Government Sanctuary Campus Resolution

Designating Wake Forest University a “Sanctuary Campus” Resolution #3
Office of the President Fall 2016

WHEREAS: The official motto of Wake Forest University is Pro Humanitate, defined by the University Admissions website as “a calling to use our knowledge, talents and compassion to better the lives of others;” and

WHEREAS: This spirit of inclusivity and philanthropy applies to all members of our community regardless of any determinant such as citizenship; and

WHEREAS: In light of a particularly divisive election cycle in our country, there has been a rise in actions that put many members of our community in danger and “stir[s] fear among marginalized groups” such as undocumented immigrants; and

WHEREAS: A 2011 internal memo clarifies that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers are subject to certain restrictions upon entering University campuses and should operate under a policy designed to ensure that “enforcement actions do not occur nor are focused on sensitive locations such as schools and churches” except in exigent circumstances; and

WHEREAS: An increasingly large number of colleges and universities across the country are entering into conversations to self-designate as a “Sanctuary Campus” to signal continued commitment to protecting all members regardless of citizenship status; and

WHEREAS: President Nathan O. Hatch recently signed on to a letter with issued by Pomona College encouraging our nation’s leaders to uphold and continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program, an initiative that has provided over 660,000 undocumented immigrant students the opportunity to receive an education in the United States without fear of deportation; and

WHEREAS: Wake Forest University can and should continue to use its position as a private university to protect its undocumented community members from law enforcement in order to uphold the values of Pro Humanitate.

(1). The Wake Forest Student Government urges Wake Forest University to adopt a written policy confirming its status as a “Sanctuary Campus” and ensures that student privacy remains guaranteed by refusing all voluntary information sharing with ICE/Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) across all aspects of the University to the fullest possible extent under law.
(2). Wake Forest University also refuses ICE physical access without a warrant to all land owned and controlled by the University.
(3). Finally, Wake Forest University also prohibits campus security from inquiring about or recording an individual’s immigration status or enforcing immigration laws or participating with ICE/CBP’s in actions.

Respectfully Submitted,

Jordan Monaghan
