Officer Dave Brosonski from the West Long Branch Police Department was the first to arrive at the scene. Hearing the boy’s desperate cries, Brosonski wasted no time.
“The boy was panicked, he was yelling he couldn’t feel his feet or arms. I just told him, ‘I’m on my way, everything’s gonna be alright,’” Brosonski recalled.
Without hesitation, he entered the freezing water. Using his knees to break through chunks of ice, he made his way toward the struggling child. Despite the icy conditions, Brosonski said he was so focused on saving the boy that he didn’t even feel the cold.
The Aftermath
After reaching the boy, Brosonski pulled him out of the frigid water and brought him back to safety. The child was immediately rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
The lake had been covered with about three inches of ice, which had attracted people for activities like ice skating and hockey. However, neighbors noted that recent warmer weather had weakened the ice, making it extremely dangerous.

“I feel it was my job… to me, it was just another day,” he said. “I’m just happy that I was the one there.”
