The city of Monterey Park came together on Tuesday night to hold a candlelight vigil in memory of the 11 lives lost in the tragic mass shooting that shook the community on January 21, 2023. The event served as a tribute to the victims while also standing as a symbol of resilience against violence.
Community leaders, survivors, and local organizations participated in the solemn gathering, offering reflections and healing support for those affected. Attendees were invited to bring flowers and memorial items, which will remain on display in front of City Hall until January 30.
Remembering the Monterey Park Shooting
On January 21, 2023, a gunman, Huu Can Tran, entered the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park during Lunar New Year celebrations and opened fire. The attack claimed the lives of 11 people and left nine others seriously injured.
Following the attack, the shooter attempted to enter Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio in nearby Alhambra, but was stopped by Brandon Tsay, a young man who courageously confronted and disarmed the gunman. The heroic act prevented further bloodshed.
The shooter, 72 years old, later died by suicide when police stopped him near a Torrance strip mall the next day.
A Community Still Healing
The Monterey Park mass shooting was the deadliest in Los Angeles County history, striking a community that is predominantly Asian American and recognized as the first suburban Chinatown in the U.S.
Congresswoman Judy Chu, who represents the area, shared a heartfelt statement, saying:
“Today, I mourn and honor the 11 lives lost, all of Asian descent, and hold their memory close. My heart is with the victims’ families and survivors as they continue to navigate the grief and trauma of that day. What should have been a joyous Lunar New Year celebration—a cherished time for the Asian American community—was tragically overshadowed by a night of senseless violence that altered our community forever.”
The impact of the shooting continues to be deeply felt, not only by the families of the victims but also by the broader Asian American community.
President Biden’s Response to the Tragedy
Following the shooting, then-President Joe Biden visited Monterey Park, met with victims’ families, and announced executive actions aimed at reducing gun violence. He later referenced the tragedy during his State of the Union address on February 7, 2023, calling for stronger gun control measures.
Standing Together Against Violence
The second anniversary vigil was more than just a memorial—it was a moment for the community to unite in solidarity and healing. Local organizations continue to provide mental health support and resources for survivors, ensuring that Monterey Park remains strong in the face of tragedy.
As the memorial items remain on display until January 30, the city hopes that the tribute will honor the victims’ memories and serve as a reminder of the resilience that defines Monterey Park.
