According to Officials, Hazard Social Security Office is Not Closing

There has been some confusion and concern regarding how the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) budget cuts might impact Social Security offices in Hazard, Kentucky. However, lawmakers have confirmed that the main Social Security Administration (SSA) office in Hazard will remain open.

What’s Really Happening?

According to Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-05), DOGE’s cost-cutting measures will only impact an unused hearing site, not the main SSA office. In a statement, he clarified:

“Social Security Administration officials informed me that it will be closing an empty Social Security office in Hazard that was designated to be used periodically for hearings. No SSA employees are stationed at the empty hearing site that will be closed.”

This means that the main SSA office, where residents go for Social Security services, will not be affected by the cuts.

Why Is the Hearing Site Closing?

The hearing site being closed was used only occasionally for Social Security hearings. However, with nearly 85% of SSA hearings now being held virtually or over the phone, DOGE has identified unused office spaces that can be eliminated to save taxpayer money.

Rogers further explained:

“With nearly 85% of SSA hearings now being held virtually or by telephone, DOGE has identified empty office space that can be closed to help save taxpayer dollars.”

No Impact on Social Security Services

Despite the closure of this unused space, Social Security services in Hazard will continue as usual. Residents can still:

  • Visit the main SSA office for assistance.
  • Attend virtual or phone hearings if needed.
  • Access Social Security benefits and services without disruption.
