A tragic case has unfolded in San Diego County as authorities have identified the wife of a Cal Fire captain as a suspect in a deadly stabbing that took place earlier this week.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday that Yolanda Marodi, also known as Yolanda Olenjniczak, is being sought in connection with the murder of her spouse, Rebecca Marodi, a highly respected firefighter with over 30 years of service.
What Happened?
Deputies responded to a residence in the 20200 block of Rancho Villa Road in Ramona on Monday evening, where they found Rebecca Marodi, 49, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the killing, but the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Yolanda Marodi is the prime suspect. The couple had been married for just over two years.
A Troubled Past: Yolanda Marodi’s Criminal History
In a shocking revelation, officials confirmed that Yolanda Marodi has a violent criminal history.
- She previously served 13 years and 8 months in prison for voluntary manslaughter in connection with the killing of James Joseph Olejniczak in San Bernardino County on October 24, 2000.
- She was released from prison and placed under parole supervision in November 2013.
The prior conviction has raised concerns about how someone with such a violent past could become involved in another deadly incident.
A Toxic Relationship Alleged by Ex-Wife
Lilia Phleger, Rebecca Marodi’s ex-wife, described Yolanda as jealous and controlling.
“It was a typical toxic relationship,” Phleger stated. “Yolanda did not want Becky to maintain her long-standing friendships with other women.”
Phleger also expressed shock over the crime taking place in the very home she once shared with Rebecca, saying:
“You don’t ever want somebody that you once cared for so much to suffer.”
A Legacy of Service: Remembering Captain Rebecca Marodi
Rebecca Marodi was a veteran firefighter whose career began in 1993 as a volunteer in Moreno Valley. She worked her way up through various firefighting roles in San Bernardino and Riverside before becoming a captain stationed in French Valley, just north of Temecula, in 2022.
Cal Fire officials released a statement mourning her loss:
“Her legacy of mentorship, service, and dedication will be felt for years to come. Beyond her operational duties, Captain Marodi was involved in Peer Support and Hazmat, always prioritizing the well-being of her colleagues.”
