Beloved New Jersey Church's Leaky Roof Problem is Headed Toward Happy Ending

After serving its Newark, New Jersey community for over six decades, Grace Temple Baptist Church found itself in need of repairs. Church leaders paid over $32,000 for a new roof, only to experience leaks just two days after completion.

After more than a year of delays, the church turned to CBS News New York Investigates, leading to a resolution.

The Church’s Struggle with a Faulty Roof

A Historic Church: Founded in 1963 by Rev. John L. McClain, the church has long been a cornerstone of the community.

The Roof Replacement:

  • In June 2023, church leaders signed a contract with Home Genius Exteriors for a $32,000+ roof replacement.
  • Just two days after the job was completed, leaks appeared in the ceiling.
  • Church members, including Deacon John Titus, who uses a wheelchair, had to navigate around water damage for more than a year and a half.

“When people come in, it’s an embarrassment to our church, our community, and our Christ,” said Rev. Keith Oden.

Repeated Calls for Repairs:

  • The company sent multiple crews but failed to identify the leak.
  • By January 2025, the company became less responsive, with missed appointments and unanswered calls.
  • Frustrated, the church contacted CBS News New York Investigates.

CBS News Steps In – And the Contractor Responds

Investigative reporter Mahsa Saeidi reached out to Home Genius Exteriors for answers.

Company’s Response:

  • Co-founder Austin Killian admitted, “We definitely made mistakes. We are going to solve this problem.”
  • Within 48 hours, company crews returned and located the leak—originating from the steeple, not the newly installed roof.
  • The company sealed the leak temporarily and committed to a permanent fix.

Company’s Official Statement:

“After thorough inspections, we determined the leak was not related to our work. However, we are covering the cost of a specialty contractor to replace their damaged copper spire at no charge.” – Home Genius Exteriors

Final Resolution: Who’s Paying for the Repairs?

Disputed Claims:

  • Home Genius Exteriors claimed a previous contractor damaged the copper spire.
  • Rev. Oden refuted this, stating:“We’ve never had any work done on the steeple at any point in our church’s existence.”

The Final Fix:

  • Rev. Oden hired a specialty contractor to replace the steeple.
  • Home Genius Exteriors agreed to cover the costs for the permanent repairs.
