Byrne to NYC Mayor Suspend Sanctuary Cities Laws

Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne has formally requested that New York City Mayor Eric Adams roll back the city’s sanctuary city policies, citing concerns over public safety and the ongoing migrant crisis. In a letter sent on January 23, Byrne urged Adams to use his emergency executive powers to suspend sanctuary laws and enhance cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Byrne Calls for Policy Changes to Address Immigration Issues

Byrne acknowledged New York City’s struggles in managing the influx of migrants and commended Mayor Adams for his recent statements supporting stronger border security and greater accountability for criminal migrants. However, he emphasized that NYC’s sanctuary policies have wider consequences beyond the city’s borders, impacting neighboring counties like Putnam.

“New York City’s policies have consequences that ripple far beyond its borders,” Byrne stated.
“The sanctuary laws adopted in recent years have created a haven for criminals, undermining public safety and straining resources not just in the city but in neighboring counties like ours.”

Byrne urged Adams to suspend sanctuary policies, even partially, to allow law enforcement agencies to better target violent criminals and gang members who may be taking advantage of the city’s current stance.

Putnam County’s Approach to Immigration Enforcement

Byrne highlighted Putnam County’s proactive stance on immigration enforcement, including a 2023 state of emergency declaration that formalized cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Though this declaration was later rescinded following new local legislation, Byrne reaffirmed the county’s commitment to public safety and effective immigration enforcement.

Legislator Erin Lee Crowley voiced her support for Byrne’s initiative, stating:

“Putnam County has worked hard to ensure the safety of our residents, and I applaud County Executive Byrne for taking a stand. It’s time for New York City to rethink its policies and prioritize the safety of all communities, not just its own.”

Proposed Changes to NYC’s Sanctuary City Policies

In his letter, Byrne proposed:

  • Suspending NYC’s sanctuary city policies, in whole or in part, to allow federal and local law enforcement agencies to target violent criminals and gang members more effectively.
  • Improving coordination with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to prevent criminals from exploiting sanctuary laws.
  • Reducing unnecessary federal enforcement actions against non-violent individuals by focusing resources on immediate threats to public safety.

Byrne’s request to Mayor Adams reflects growing concerns among neighboring counties about New York City’s sanctuary policies and their broader impact. As debates over immigration policy continue, it remains to be seen whether Adams will consider modifying NYC’s stance or maintain current protections for undocumented immigrants.
