Dementia Affects Both the Caregiver and the Patient, Social Workers Say. Here's What's Being Done to Help Both

Nearly 7 million Americans aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. In New York alone, more than 426,000 seniors have been diagnosed, with the Bronx having the highest prevalence in the state.

For caregivers, the emotional and financial burden can be overwhelming. However, programs, therapies, and community support are available to help both patients and their families navigate this difficult journey.

Symptoms of Dementia: What to Watch For

Dementia affects:

  • Thinking & Memory – Forgetting names, places, and events frequently.
  • Reasoning & Judgment – Making unusual decisions, like putting household items in the refrigerator.
  • Mood & Personality Changes – Increased confusion, aggression, or withdrawal from social activities.

“The hallmark symptom is forgetting things,” said Edward Cisek, chief research officer at Caring Kind.

Early detection can help patients and families prepare for the challenges ahead.

The Cost and Stress of Caregiving

For Victoria Henriquez, caring for her 93-year-old mother, Vivianna, has been a 10-year journey filled with love, sacrifice, and challenges.

“She asks me the same thing every five minutes. The worst part of this is the repetition,” Henriquez shared.

Many caregivers face:

  • Emotional stress – Watching a loved one’s memory decline.
  • Financial strain – Covering medical expenses and home care.
  • Physical exhaustion – Managing daily tasks like bathing, feeding, and supervision.

To reduce stress, caregiving organizations offer free guidance and support.

Free Support for New Yorkers: How ‘Caring Kind’ Helps

Caring Kind, a New York-based dementia support organization, provides free programs to help families manage the progression of Alzheimer’s.

  • Connect to Living Program – Helps dementia patients stay engaged with their communities.
  • Caregiver Coaching – Provides emotional and practical support to family caregivers.
  • Brain Health & Nutrition – A 30-day program in the Bronx promoting healthy habits to reduce dementia risk.

Dante Tipiani, a caregiver advocate who lost his father to dementia, emphasizes the importance of patience and preparation.

“She [Henriquez] is more prepared now. She knows how to react when her mother faces challenges.” – Tipiani

For caregivers, understanding dementia behavior and using communication techniques can ease daily struggles.

Therapies That Help Alzheimer’s Patients

While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, certain activities and therapies can help slow cognitive decline:

  • Cognitive Stimulation Therapy – Engaging in conversations, puzzles, or storytelling.
  • Healthy Diet – A nutrient-rich diet supports brain function.
  • Socialization – Spending time with friends and family boosts emotional well-being.
  • Music, Movies, and Family Photos – Stimulating old memories through familiar songs or films.

When patients become confused or anxious, caregivers can use a “therapeutic lie”:

“If a patient wants to go home, saying ‘We’ll go home in five minutes’ can provide reassurance,” Tipiani explained.

Why the Bronx Needs Specialized Dementia Programs

With New York ranking second in projected Alzheimer’s cases nationwide, the Bronx has been identified as a high-risk area.

To address this, Caring Kind launched a community program encouraging residents to:

  • Improve eating habits for better brain health.
  • Engage in brain-stimulating activities like learning new skills.
  • Follow a 30-day wellness plan to build healthy routines.

“The conversations you have, even learning new instruments or dancing, can help reduce dementia risks,” Cisek added.

Early intervention and lifestyle changes can make a significant difference in brain function.
