January 2025 has been one of the coldest months in recent memory, with temperatures consistently staying below freezing. However, despite the freezing temperatures, snowfall has been surprisingly scarce due to an overall lack of precipitation. In fact, this January is officially the driest on record in Central Park, with records dating back to the 1860s.
So far, less than half an inch of liquid-equivalent precipitation has fallen, most of which came down as snow, totaling only about three inches. But with the month not yet over, there are still some opportunities for additional snowfall—at least in some areas.
Upcoming Weather Systems and Their Impact
This week, multiple low-pressure systems are set to move through the Tri-State area, bringing a mix of rain, snow, and even some ice, though the impact will vary by location. The most notable weather events are expected on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
Wednesday: Light Snow for Some Areas
A weak clipper system will pass to the north on Wednesday, bringing light snow accumulation primarily to the Catskills and Hudson Valley. Most places that do receive snow will only see less than an inch, though higher elevations may get 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts possible.
However, Central Park is unlikely to see any snowfall from this system. At most, a few passing flurries may occur, but no significant accumulation is expected. The timing of this system suggests late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, potentially causing reduced visibility and slick road conditions for the morning commute.
Friday: Heavy Rain Instead of Snow
Friday’s weather event will be the most significant of the week, but for those hoping for snow, it will be a disappointment. Due to temperatures well above freezing in Central Park, the system will bring all rain to the city.
However, in areas further north and west, where temperatures are cooler, there could be a brief period of freezing rain or an icy glaze before conditions warm up and everything changes to rain. No significant snowfall is expected.
This storm will bring a decent amount of rainfall, likely more rain in one day than the city has received all month so far. If you’re heading out on Friday, be sure to bring an umbrella and rain jacket as it will be a wet and soggy day.
Sunday: Another Rain-Snow Mix
Sunday presents another chance for precipitation, but once again, snowfall is unlikely for the city. Current forecasts indicate that a brief period of light snow could occur at the start, but it will quickly switch over to rain. This transition will prevent any meaningful snow accumulation since whatever snow does fall will likely melt right away.
Looking Ahead: Dry Weather After Sunday
Following Sunday’s system, the forecast suggests a dry stretch of days, with no significant precipitation expected in the immediate future. If you’re hoping for another chance at snow, you may have to wait until February, when conditions could become more favorable.
With record-low precipitation and unseasonably cold temperatures, January 2025 is shaping up to be an unusual winter month. Whether you’re looking forward to more snow or simply hoping for milder weather, stay prepared for changing conditions in the weeks ahead!
