Michele Fitzsimmons has made history as the first female deputy chief in the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). A 24-year veteran, Fitzsimmons was promoted from battalion chief to deputy chief, making her the highest-ranking woman in FDNY’s fire operations.
Promotion Date: Friday, February 16, 2024
Years of Service: Since 2001
A Historic Milestone for Women in FDNY
Fitzsimmons, who comes from a family of firefighters, expressed humility and pride in her achievement.
“I feel like I did the same thing as everyone else. I took the same tests and worked hard to get here. I’m privileged to be among my peers,” she said.
Her promotion highlights progress in gender representation within the FDNY, which has historically been male-dominated.
FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker praised Fitzsimmons’ accomplishment, stating, “Michele embodies everything we want to show all of our firefighters, especially women. She represents the future leadership of this department.”
A Family Legacy in Firefighting
Firefighting runs in Fitzsimmons’ family.
- Her great-grandfather joined FDNY in 1909.
- Her grandfather joined in 1932.
- Her sister joined in 2006.
She has continued this family tradition, breaking barriers along the way.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Women Firefighters
Fitzsimmons hopes her promotion will encourage more women to join and advance within the FDNY.
“I hope women in the department see themselves climbing the ranks. And I hope young girls see themselves as future firefighters in New York City,” she said.
With more women entering fire services, Fitzsimmons’ historic promotion is a powerful symbol of progress.
