A Familiar Face Returns to San Francisco
The San Francisco 49ers have officially brought back Robert Saleh as their new defensive coordinator, marking a significant reunion for the team. Saleh, who previously served in the same role from 2017 to 2020, returns after a challenging stint as head coach of the New York Jets. Despite his struggles in New York, his reputation as a top-tier defensive strategist remains intact.
Saleh’s Coaching Journey
After leaving the 49ers in 2020, Saleh became the head coach of the Jets. However, his tenure was rocky, with the team posting a 20-36 record over nearly four seasons. He was dismissed in October 2024 after just five games into his fourth season. While the Jets’ offense struggled significantly under his leadership, Saleh’s defensive units consistently ranked among the NFL’s best.
Over the past three seasons, the Jets finished in the top five in total defense, ranking fourth in 2022, third in 2023, and third again in 2024. His previous tenure with the 49ers also saw impressive defensive success, including a second-ranked defense in 2019, the year San Francisco reached the Super Bowl.
49ers’ Defensive Struggles Since Saleh’s Departure
Since Saleh left for New York, the 49ers have had trouble maintaining stability at the defensive coordinator position. DeMeco Ryans took over and performed well, earning a head coaching job with the Houston Texans after the 2022 season. His successor, Steve Wilks, helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl in 2023 but was fired after just one season.
In 2024, Nick Sorensen took over as defensive coordinator, but San Francisco’s defense saw a sharp decline. While they finished eighth in total yards allowed—matching their 2023 ranking—their scoring defense collapsed, plummeting from third in points allowed to 29th. This marked their worst defensive ranking in that category since 2016, a year in which they went 2-14.
What Saleh Brings Back to the 49ers
Saleh’s return signals a renewed commitment to defensive dominance in San Francisco. Known for his aggressive, high-energy coaching style and ability to develop elite defensive units, he is expected to restore stability and consistency to a defense that has been in flux for the past few seasons.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan will be hoping that Saleh’s leadership can once again turn the 49ers into a top-tier defensive force, especially after a disappointing 2024 campaign. With a talented roster already in place, Saleh’s familiarity with the organization and proven track record make him a strong choice to lead the unit back to elite status.
As the 49ers look to bounce back in 2025, all eyes will be on Saleh and how quickly he can rebuild a defense that was once one of the NFL’s best under his guidance.
