Hazardous Ocean Water Rain Advisory for All LA County Beaches Due to Rainstorm

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued an ocean water quality advisory for all county beaches due to potentially high bacteria levels caused by heavy rainfall.

Why Is the Advisory in Place?

Heavy rain causes runoff from streets, storm drains, and burn scar areas, carrying harmful bacteria and pollutants into the ocean.

“Individuals who enter the water in these areas could become ill,” health officials warned.

The advisory specifically urges people to avoid water contact near:

  • Storm drains
  • Creeks and rivers
  • Burn scar areas

How Long Will the Advisory Last?

  • The advisory will remain in effect until at least 11 a.m. on Monday.
  • Rain advisories typically last for 72 hours after rainfall ends but may be extended if necessary.

Additionally, once the general rain advisory is lifted, a separate ocean water advisory will remain in effect from Las Flores State Beach to Santa Monica State Beach until further notice.

Health Risks from Contaminated Water

Swimming in contaminated ocean water can cause:

  • Gastrointestinal illnesses
  • Skin infections
  • Ear, nose, and throat infections

Residents and visitors should avoid swimming in the ocean near storm drains, rivers, and burn scar areas due to high bacteria levels from storm runoff. Officials will continue to monitor water quality and update advisories as needed.
