Illinois Bill Would Establish the State's Own DOGE to Eliminate Wasteful Spending

Illinois Representative John Cabello, a Republican from Illinois, has introduced a new bill aimed at controlling the state’s rising spending habits. The bill, known as HB1266, proposes the creation of a new agency called the Illinois Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

This agency would be responsible for reviewing government spending, cutting unnecessary costs, and eliminating redundant laws, administrative rules, and state agencies.

Cabello’s proposal draws inspiration from a similar federal initiative led by billionaire Elon Musk. His goal? To help Illinois achieve a balanced budget—something the state hasn’t managed since 2002.

What Is the Illinois DOGE?

The proposed Illinois DOGE would be part of the existing Office of the Auditor General. It would be run by a board of directors consisting of four members—two Republicans and two Democrats—appointed by the General Assembly.

Key features of the DOGE:

  • Non-paid experts: The agency would recruit specialists in various fields who would volunteer their expertise without using taxpayer money.
  • Bipartisan leadership: With equal representation from both major political parties, the board aims to ensure fair and balanced decision-making.
  • Focus on cutting waste: The agency would identify outdated or unnecessary laws, administrative rules, and even entire state agencies that could be trimmed to save money.

Why Is This Proposal Important?

Cabello argues that Illinois’ spending has spiraled out of control over the years. By establishing the DOGE, he believes the state can:

  • Reduce unnecessary government spending
  • Streamline operations for greater efficiency
  • Move closer to a balanced budget for the first time in more than two decades

Cabello also believes that requiring state employees to return to in-person work will improve productivity and service quality. Although some critics fear that budget cuts could slow government services, Cabello insists that accountability and efficiency should remain the top priorities.

The Federal Connection: Elon Musk’s Role

At the federal level, a similar DOGE initiative is linked to Elon Musk, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump to help shrink the size of the U.S. government. However, this federal initiative has faced backlash and legal challenges.

  • Privacy concerns: Multiple federal worker unions have filed lawsuits claiming that Musk’s DOGE initiative could violate worker privacy.
  • Court ruling: A judge recently allowed two of Musk’s allies “read-only” access to Treasury Department payment systems, but Musk himself, along with others, remains restricted from full access.

Interestingly, Illinois is among several states suing the Trump administration for allowing this federal agency access to sensitive Treasury data.

What’s Next for Illinois DOGE?

While Cabello’s bill is still under consideration, it reflects a growing concern about government spending and efficiency not just in Illinois, but across the U.S. If passed, the Illinois DOGE could set a new standard for how state governments manage taxpayer money and eliminate bureaucratic waste.
