In Palisades Fire Zone, Woman Wearing Palisades Strong Shirt Was Caught Stealing From House on Burned-Out Property

A woman has been arrested for allegedly looting a Pacific Palisades property destroyed by the devastating Palisades Fire in January 2025. Adding a disturbing twist, she was reportedly wearing a shirt that read “Palisades Strong” during the theft, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The suspect, identified as Karen Mastey, was taken into custody on Friday and charged with grand theft after officers recovered stolen antique items from her residence in Valencia.

How the Arrest Unfolded

The incident began around 1 p.m. when CHP officers were dispatched to the fire-damaged property following a report of looting. Despite arriving at the scene quickly, officers were unable to locate the suspect immediately.

However, a witness provided a detailed description of both:

  • The suspect (Mastey)
  • The suspect’s vehicle

Using this information, officers traced the vehicle’s registration to a Valencia address. CHP officers from the Newhall Area Office were sent to the location, where they found Mastey and recovered several antique items allegedly stolen from the Pacific Palisades property.

Charges and Booking

Mastey was arrested on suspicion of:

  • Grand theft

She was booked at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Santa Clarita Valley station.

CHP’s Response:

“I am incredibly proud of the swift action taken by our officers to protect the public and prevent further harm. Their commitment to serving and assisting those in need during this challenging period reflects the highest standards of the CHP,” said Southern Division Chief Chris Margaris.

Background on the Palisades Fire

The Palisades Fire broke out in January 2025, destroying multiple properties and forcing evacuations across the Pacific Palisades neighborhood. Many residents are still recovering from the devastation, making this looting incident especially egregious for a community already reeling from loss.
