LAUSD Cellphone Ban is Scheduled to Take Effect in Hundreds of Schools Throughout the District

Starting Tuesday, a cellphone ban will go into effect at hundreds of schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), restricting student use of phones, smartwatches, and social media during the school day.

Why is LAUSD implementing this ban?

  • To improve student focus in classrooms.
  • To limit exposure to inappropriate content.
  • To reduce smartphone dependency among students.

The ban was passed in 2024 and aligns with similar policies nationwide.

How Will Schools Enforce the Ban?

Different schools will enforce the ban in various ways, including:

  • Stored in backpacks – Students must keep their phones in their bags.
  • Portable storage units – Phones are placed in designated areas.
  • Magnetic or Velcro pouches – Locked pouches that students carry but cannot open.
  • Classroom phone holders – Devices stored in designated holders during class.

When Are Students Allowed to Use Their Phones?

The policy follows California’s Phone-Free School Act, signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in September 2024.

Students may use their phones only in the following cases:

  • In emergencies or when responding to a threat of danger.
  • With teacher or administrator permission.
  • For medical reasons, as determined by a licensed physician.
  • If required by an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
