Lottery for Affordable Long Island Home is Now Open

A brand-new three-bedroom house in Uniondale, NY, is being sold for less than half the usual price of homes in the area. The home, valued at around $285,000, will be sold through a lottery system, now open for applicants.

  • Lottery Deadline: Monday
  • Winner Announcement: Early March
  • Estimated Move-in Date: Summer 2025

What is the Uniondale Community Land Trust (U-CLT)?

The Uniondale Community Land Trust (U-CLT) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making homeownership affordable for low- and moderate-income families.

How It Works:

  • U-CLT retains ownership of the land, while homebuyers purchase the house at a lower cost.
  • Buyers must be first-time homeowners earning below the area’s median income.
  • This model ensures long-term affordability and stability for families.

“We are bringing you an opportunity to invest in your future,” said U-CLT board member Paul Gibson.

Why is This Home So Affordable?

  • Built Using Modular Construction – The home is constructed off-site, making it cost-effective and energy-efficient.
  • Land Trust Model – Buyers pay only for the house, not the land.
  • Funded by Grants & Donations – Helping keep costs low for eligible buyers.

“Many people my age are leaving Long Island because they can’t afford it,” said U-CLT Treasurer Olena Nicks. “This program allows them to stay in their community.”

Previous Lottery Success & High Demand

  • U-CLT’s first home sold for $220,000 and received over 100 applicants.
  • The second lottery has already attracted dozens of applicants.

“In a community where homes go for $600,000, this will be significantly less,” said Nicks. “The monthly mortgage will be about 30% of the buyer’s gross salary.”
