Lynne Heflin Receives the Gene Hooks Lifetime Achievement Award for Her Dedication to Wake Forest Athletics

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.Lynne Heflin, who served as the administrative assistant to Wake Forest’s head basketball coaches for 35 years, has been awarded the prestigious Gene Hooks Lifetime Achievement Award. Her tireless work behind the scenes and her ability to build lasting relationships with coaches, players, and staff have left an enduring legacy at Wake Forest Athletics.

“When they told me they were giving me this award, I was stunned and honored,” Heflin said. “You don’t often think of yourself the way other people do.”

A Lifelong Commitment to Wake Forest Basketball

Starting as a temporary assistant in 1985, Heflin worked with six different head coaches, including Bob Staak, Dave Odom, Skip Prosser, and Danny Manning. Her role evolved over the years, initially titled secretary and later administrative assistant, but her impact went far beyond managing schedules and office tasks.

Heflin oversaw everything from coaches’ calendars, budget management, and ticket requests to maintaining connections with former players to ensure they always felt part of the basketball family.

“No two days were the same,” Heflin said, describing her job as a dream role where she was more of a facilitator and family builder than just an office worker.

A Positive Influence on Players and Coaches

Heflin’s influence extended beyond the office. She developed strong personal connections with Demon Deacon players, supporting them during their time at Wake Forest and long after they moved on to careers beyond basketball.

“I had a relationship with all the players, and I think that’s what I miss the most,” Heflin said. “The six head coaches and dozens of student-athletes I got to know over the years were all special in their own ways.”

Her dedication to player welfare, particularly during memorable moments like the team’s back-to-back ACC Championship run, is fondly remembered by many.
