MALIBU, CA — All Malibu schools will be closed on Thursday, February 13, and possibly Friday, February 14, 2025, due to the powerful rainstorm approaching Southern California and the increased risk of mudslides and debris flows.
Why Are Schools Closing?
Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Antonio Shelton announced the closure of:
- Webster Elementary
- Malibu Elementary
- Malibu Middle School
- Malibu High School
Reasons for Closure:
- Heavy rain could trigger mudslides and debris flows, particularly in burn scar areas from the Franklin Fire and Palisades Fire.
- Malibu Canyon Road will be closed from early Thursday morning through 6 p.m. Friday.
- Pacific Coast Highway and Topanga Canyon remain partially closed, making school bus travel unsafe.
Flash Flood Warning in Effect
The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning:
- Start: Thursday at 1 p.m.
- End: Friday at 4 a.m.
- Concerns: Excessive rainfall, possible debris flows, and road hazards.
