Hair loss is a common and often distressing condition, but a New Jersey dermatologist says he has developed a new treatment that may help regrow hair without surgery.
For about a year, Dr. Sandy Milgraum, a dermatologist in East Brunswick, has been offering dutasteride microinjections to treat pattern hair loss. So far, he has treated approximately 100 patients with this method.
How Dutasteride Works for Hair Loss
Dutasteride is a medication originally approved by the FDA to treat enlarged prostates. It works by blocking dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to both prostate enlargement and hair loss.
Dr. Milgraum explains:“DHT causes hair follicles to shrink over time, leading to thinning hair. By blocking DHT, hair thickens and regrows.”
Unlike the oral form of the drug, which is used for prostate issues, the hair loss treatment involves low-dose injections directly into the scalp.
Treatment Results and Patient Experience
How soon does it work?
Patients typically see results within a month after starting treatment.
Who is it for?
- Men and women with pattern hair loss
- Not effective for completely bald areas where follicles are no longer active
Side Effects:
- Mild stiffness or numbness around the injection site, usually disappearing within 24 hours
One patient, Sandra Molnar, started treatment in May and noticed new hair growth after just one month.
“It was a total relief. I’m very happy with the outcome,” she said.
Cost and Availability
Total Cost: $1,800 for three sessions
Insurance Coverage: Not covered, as it is considered a cosmetic treatment
Dr. Milgraum emphasizes that early intervention is key for the best results.
“If someone is already bald, there’s nothing left to stimulate,” he said.
