NYC's New Area Code Has Been Revealed. This is When It Will Be Activated

New York City is getting a new area code—465, which will be assigned to new phone numbers across all five boroughs in the coming years. The New York State Public Service Commission announced the update three weeks after first revealing the change.

When Will the 465 Area Code Be Used?

The 465 area code will not be activated until all numbers from the existing 347, 718, 917, and 929 area codes are exhausted. Officials estimate that 465 phone numbers could be issued as early as October 2026.

What This Means for Current Phone Numbers

  • Existing phone numbers will remain unchanged.
  • The 465 area code will only apply to newly assigned numbers.
  • Callers will still need to dial 10 digits for all local calls, as required under the area code overlay system.

Why Is a New Area Code Needed?

The rise in mobile devices and digital technology has significantly increased the demand for phone numbers. According to Public Service Commission Chair Rory M. Christian:

“With increased telephone usage, we must accommodate the growing demand for phone numbers. The new area code will ensure that there are enough phone numbers available for New Yorkers.”

Officials also pointed out that the demand is a sign of economic growth and the expansion of telecommunications services.

How Are New Area Codes Assigned?

New York, like other regions in the U.S., follows the all-services area code overlay system. This means:

  • New numbers receive a new area code when old ones run out.
  • Multiple area codes coexist in the same geographic region.
  • This method avoids disrupting existing numbers while ensuring a continuous supply of new ones.

Recent Area Code Changes in New York

  • Long Island introduced area code 363 in January 2023, overlaying the existing 516 area code.
  • New York City previously added 929 in 2011, following the addition of 917 and 347 years earlier.
