Second NYPD-Involved Shooting in 24 Hours

This was the second police shooting in NYC within 24 hours.

Early Tuesday morning, a detective with 20 years on the force was shot and wounded while attempting to serve a warrant on 35-year-old Edwin Rivera.

  • Rivera, a convicted felon on parole, opened fire, hitting the detective.
  • Officers returned fire, striking Rivera.
  • Both the detective and Rivera are expected to recover.

Commissioner Calls for Tougher Policies on Repeat Offenders

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch expressed frustration over career criminals being released on parole, questioning:

“Why was this individual out of jail and in a position to shoot our officers? How is the system set up to allow one person to commit multiple violent offenses while out on parole with no consequences?”

Investigations Underway

Both officer-involved shootings are under internal review, as is standard procedure whenever police discharge their weapons.
