Rainstorm causes road closures and flash flood warnings in portions of LA County

Los Angeles County is experiencing its first rainstorm of the season, bringing road closures and flash flood warnings, particularly in areas impacted by recent wildfires. The rainstorm has heightened the risk of flooding and debris flows in burn scar regions, with warnings in effect until 11 p.m. Sunday.

Flash Flood Warning for Burn Scar Areas

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood warning for the Franklin burn scar in Malibu and the western portion of the Palisades burn scar near Las Flores Canyon Road. These areas are especially vulnerable to dangerous debris flows, which the NWS has warned could be life-threatening.

Burn scar areas, which have lost vegetation that would normally stabilize the soil, are at an increased risk of mudslides and flash flooding during heavy rains.

Cities at Risk of Flooding

The rainstorm has raised the likelihood of roadway flooding and minor debris flows across several cities, particularly those near wildfire burn scars. Areas expected to experience flooding include:

  • Eaton Fire burn scar
  • Alhambra
  • Whittier
  • Pasadena
  • West Covina
  • Mount Wilson
  • Downtown Los Angeles
  • Glendora
  • San Dimas
  • Griffith Park
  • Pomona
  • Burbank
  • Hollywood
  • Altadena
  • Eagle Rock
  • La Canada Flintridge
  • Glendale
  • Hancock Park
  • La Verne
  • Hollywood Hills

Precautions for Residents

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid driving through flooded roads or areas prone to debris flows.
  • Stay updated on weather alerts and road closure information.
  • Have an emergency plan ready, especially if living near burn scar zones.
  • Monitor local news and official channels for evacuation instructions if conditions worsen.

The NWS also emphasizes that debris flows in burn scar regions can occur rapidly and with little warning, making it essential for residents to remain vigilant.

As Los Angeles County deals with its first rainstorm of the season, the risks posed by flash flooding and debris flows in burn scar areas are a stark reminder of the lingering impacts of wildfires. Residents are urged to stay alert and prioritize safety as the storm continues.
