Riverside Man Who Robbed Convenience Stores While Wearing a Clown Mask Was Sentenced to Over 30 Years in Prison

A Riverside man who carried out a series of armed robberies while wearing a clown mask has been sentenced to 30 years and eight months in prison. Jesse James Swanson, 24, pleaded guilty in January 2024 to multiple felony charges, including attempted murder and armed robbery, as part of a plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.

Details of the Crimes

Swanson’s arrest in December 2023 followed a months-long investigation by the Riverside Police Department, which linked him to three armed robberies at local convenience stores.

Robbery Timeline

  • August 26, 2023 – Circle K store, 1600 block of Main Street
  • September 2, 2023 – Same Circle K store hit again
  • September 7, 2023 – 7-Eleven, 1100 block of W. La Cadena Drive

In each robbery, Swanson wore a clown mask and brandished a pistol, threatening store employees.

During one incident, Swanson fired a shot at a person, though no one was struck. Authorities have not confirmed whether the individual was a store employee or a bystander.

Investigation and Arrests

Riverside police identified Swanson as the suspect through surveillance footage and witness statements.

Additionally, investigators arrested Daniel William Clark, 57, who was believed to be Swanson’s getaway driver.

  • Clark was arrested in November 2023 for conspiracy to commit a felony.
  • However, he was never officially charged in connection with the case.

Plea Agreement and Sentencing

Swanson pleaded guilty to the following charges:

  • Attempted murder
  • Making criminal threats
  • Three counts of armed robbery
  • Gun use enhancement

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped several additional charges. The agreement was approved by Superior Court Judge Helios Hernandez on Friday.

Prior Criminal Record

Court records show Swanson has a history of felony convictions, including:

  • Receiving stolen goods
  • Resisting arrest
  • Attempted grand theft auto

With a sentence of over 30 years, Swanson will spend decades behind bars for his violent robbery spree. His case highlights the severe consequences of armed offenses, as well as the dedication of law enforcement in tracking down repeat offenders.
