A Hasbrouck Heights man, Raymond Carey, 53, is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly shooting a woman in the face with a crossbow inside a Saddle Brook exotic bird store.

  • Location: Birds By Joe 2, Route 46, Saddle Brook, NJ

Crossbow Attack Shocks Local Business Owners

According to witnesses, Carey was a regular customer who walked into the store, pulled out a crossbow, and shot the victim without warning.

“As soon as he comes to the store, he takes out the bow… and shoots her,” said Deniz Taska, a friend of the victim.

Victim Runs for Help, Hands Over the Crossbow

  • After being shot, the victim ran into a nearby bike store screaming for help.
  • Employees saw blood pouring from her mouth and her holding the crossbow.
  • Bike store worker Ryan Oracz called 911 immediately.

“There was a fair bit of blood. She was holding a napkin to her face,” Oracz recalled.

Suspect Arrested Within 24 Hours

  • Saddle Brook police, Bergen County prosecutors, and the FBI tracked Carey down using his vehicle details.
  • He was arrested Tuesday in Pine Beach, just before 1 p.m.

Victim Recovering but Traumatized

  • She suffered injuries to her lips, cheek, and broken teeth.
  • She returned to work the next day, but remains deeply shaken.

“She is traumatized. She doesn’t want to talk to anyone,” Taska said.

Motive Unknown – Was It Related to a Recent Parrot Theft?

  • Carey was a frequent customer who visited every other week.
  • His motive remains unclear.

“We have no idea why he did it,” Taska said.

In January, a $7,000 African grey parrot was stolen from the same shop. While it was eventually returned, police do not believe the incidents are connected at this time.

Community Rallies Behind Victim

“She literally hand-feeds each one of the birds,” said Victor Jaramillo, a local print shop owner. “I just want her to heal quickly and get back to what she loves.”

What’s Next?

  • Carey faces attempted murder, weapons, and obstruction charges.
  • Investigations are ongoing to determine his motive.
