Still, I Don't Believe That Kang Defeated Thor in the MCU

Marvel Studios originally positioned Kang the Conqueror as the MCU’s next Thanos, but Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania failed to establish him as a genuine threat. One of Kang’s most bold claims in the movie was that he defeated and killed Thor in another timeline—but is there any reason to believe it actually happened?

Kang Claims He Killed Thor in Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania

During a confrontation with Scott Lang, Kang ominously asks:

“You’re an Avenger. Have I killed you before?… They all blur together after a while. You’re not the one with the hammer?”

This implies that Kang has killed a Thor variant—possibly multiple times—while conquering different timelines. However, the film never shows any of these victories, making the statement feel empty rather than intimidating.

Compare this to Avengers: Infinity War, which immediately establishes Thanos as a terrifying villain by showing him manhandling Hulk and killing Loki.

  • Thanos proved his strength through action, while Kang only talks about it.
  • Without any visual confirmation of Kang killing Thor, the claim falls flat.

Kang’s Defeat in Quantumania Undermines His Credibility

Even if Kang truly killed a Thor variant, it’s hard to believe after watching Ant-Man take him down.

Kang was defeated by:

  • An army of ants (seriously, ants).
  • Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne outsmarting him.
  • A prolonged fistfight with Ant-Man, who—while capable—is nowhere near as powerful as Thor.

If Kang is powerful enough to kill a god, why did he struggle so much against Ant-Man?

If he lost to Scott Lang, then heroes like Thor, Captain Marvel, or Doctor Strange should have no problem defeating him.

Why Marvel’s Kang Setup Failed

Marvel wanted Kang to be more terrifying than Thanos, but they made critical mistakes:

  • They told instead of showed – We hear about Kang’s past conquests, but we never see them.
  • His first big fight was a letdown – Thanos debuted by destroying Thor’s ship and wiping out half of Asgard’s survivors, while Kang… got beaten by ants.
  • His power levels are inconsistent – If he’s the “most powerful variant”, why was he so weak?

These missteps hurt audience investment in Kang as the Multiverse Saga’s main villain, which is why Marvel is now pivoting to Doctor Doom instead.
